* Do you know what IMAP is?

Suggested article: What is IMAP?

Internet Message Access Protocol, also commonly known as IMAP, is a well-known protocol for receiving email messages from a mail server over a TCP/IP connection. It works in the middle of the email server and the email client.

The IMAP protocol, similar to other applications, requires a logical point of connection to the Internet, known as a port.

Typically IMAP uses one of the following port numbers:

  • Port 143: It is the default port, and it is a non-encrypted IMAP port.
  • Port 993: It is the encrypted IMAP port (secure).

It is important to mention it is best for port 143 not to be open and accessible to the outer world on any account simply because this port number is not safe and secure. A lot of cyber criminals take advantage of it and initiate malicious attacks. For that reason, the usage of a more secure port like Port 993 is highly recommended.
